Recap
Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Huntly v Fraserburgh, Wednesday 2nd November 2022
Huntly had the first effort of the game when Cameron Blacklock’s swirling cross came back off the crossbar. On 14 minutes Ross Aitken went on a driving run which ended with Logan Watt seeing his shot saved by Fraser Hobday, after Paul Campbell had just failed to get on the end of the initial cross.
Four minutes later Watt’s cross was met by the head of Kieran Simpson but this time it was the visitors who had cause to rue the woodwork as the defender’s effort smacked off the crossbar. Simpson was denied again on 23 minutes when Scott Barbour found space on the left to cross but Hobday was in the right position to pull off a great save.
Huntly came close on 27 minutes when Adam Hunter found Adam Morris inside the penalty area but the shot was deflected wide for a corner. The woodwork was playing a big part in the game and on 33 minutes a swirling cross by William West came back off the crossbar to Barbour who couldn’t force home the rebound. A minute later Campbell released Barbour and the Broch striker poked the ball beyond Hobday and into the net to give the visitors the lead.
Huntly levelled on 39 minutes when Hunter found Callum Murray with a pass at the edge of the penalty area and he swept the ball past Joe Barbour in the Fraserburgh goal. The Broch had one more chance before the break when Paul Young crossed to the back post where Sean Butcher saw his diving header go wide.
Half Time: Huntly 1 Fraserburgh 1
Paul Young tested Hobday from 25 yards two minutes into the second half with the Huntly keeper getting a fingertip to the ball to turn it round the post. On 54 minutes Morris tripped Campbell inside the box and the Broch striker made no mistake from the spot to regain the lead for the Broch. The visitors were in total control and Butcher flicked the ball onto Young who saw another shot pushed away by Hobday.
The third goal was only delayed by seconds though as Barbour’s corner was cleared off the line by the home defence, West was on hand the head the rebound home. Huntly had a chance on 70 minutes to reduce the leeway when the ball broke to Michael Clark after a corner had been cleared but he poked the ball over the crossbar.
Simpson tried his luck from a free-kick on 78 minutes which Hobday somehow managed to tip over the crossbar. Right at the death Barbour’s through ball was deflected by a home defender and Hobday did well to save, the rebound broke to Young who tucked the ball home to complete the scoring.
