Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup Quarter Final, Fraserburgh v Inverurie Loco Works, Wednesday 17th August 2022
The Broch had an early chance to take the lead when Jordan Guild curled in a dangerous cross which Aidan Combe managed to steer a header just wide. On three minutes Scott Barbour, Sean Butcher and Combe all combined to set up a chance for Ryan Sargent who saw his net-bound shot well saved by Andy Reid. A corner from the left a minute later by Barbour was met by the head of Butcher but once again Reid was on hand to save the striker’s effort.
At the other end Robert Ward managed to get clear of the home defence but Joe Barbour was well positioned to block the Locos player’s shot. Guild then tried his luck from 20 yards which the visitor’s keeper Reid did well to hold. Sargent then crossed for Barbour who turned well to get a shot away which went just wide of the target. Midway through the half Bryan Hay found William West on the left, he cut inside and passed to Sargent whose shot was saved by Reid.
The Locos keeper then pulled off another decent save when Butcher got on the end of a Ross Aitken cross. As so often happens the team doing the pressing got caught on the break when a Kieran Simpson back-pass got away from Barbour and Taylor Thain knocked the ball inside to Ward who tapped the ball into an empty net. Just before the break The Broch came within a post width of an equaliser when Simpson got on the end of a Barbour corner but his shot smacked off the upright and was cleared to safety.

The second half was only 6 minutes old when the Broch levelled. Combe found Sargent inside the box and although his shot was blocked the rebound fell to Barbour who managed to divert the ball into the net. The Broch striker then saw a good shot on the turn well saved after Guild had picked him out with a defence splitting pass.
West the crossed for Combe and his goal bound effort was palmed away by the impressive Reid in the Locos goal. Garry Wood tried his luck with a speculative effort 13 minutes from time which went wide of Barbour’s goal. The Broch had one final chance as the game entered the final five minutes when Barbour and Butcher combined to set up Paul Campbell but his shot flew across the face of goal and just wide of the far post.

Both side scored their first penalty in the shootout before Locos gained the advantage after Kieran Simpson’s spot kick was saved. Joe Barbour evened things up with a great save from Ward’s penalty and Bryan Hay ensured it would go to sudden death after scoring the Broch’s fifth penalty. Both team then scored their next six penalties including both keepers. Joe Barbour produced more heroics to deny Thain but Scott Barbour fired the Broch’s next one over the crossbar. Dingwall did the same with Locos thirteenth penalty and it was left to Simpson to hammer home and send the Broch through to an away semi-final tie at Turriff United who beat Aberdeen University 10-0.
