Recap

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Turriff United v Fraserburgh, Wednesday 5th October 2022

An early mistake in the Turriff defence saw Ryan Sargent win the ball back and cross into the penalty area for Logan Watt to nod home on 3 minutes. At the other end Joe Barbour had to react smartly to deny Rory Brown. There was no let up to a frantic start with Ross Aitken crossing and Scott Barbour heading just wide.

Aitken then set up Paul Campbell on 8 minutes only for Tim Findlay to produce a fine save to deny the Broch striker. The visitors did double their lead a minute later when Watt regained possession and squared the ball for Barbour to tap into an empty net. Bryan Hay then tried his luck on 19 minutes latching onto a Watt cross that had been cleared but his effort was blocked.

Turriff thought they had pulled a goal back in the 23rd minute when Reece McKeown controlled a long ball forward and slotted the ball past Barbour, however the assistant referee flagged for offside. A Barbour corner was met by the head of Kieran Simpson but cleared off the line by James Chalmers. It wasn’t all one-way traffic though, Hay’s attempted clearance fell to Jack McKenzie who fired wide.

On 31 minutes Sargent set up Barbour who rolled his defender and fired a shot just wide of Findlay’s far post. The Broch striker had another effort three minutes later after Paul Young won the ball back, but Findlay was able to make a good save. Young then had a go himself after Watt set him up, the midfielder’s effort went fizzing wide of the goal.

Half Time: Turriff United 0 Fraserburgh 2

A minute after the break Turriff pulled a goal back when Murray Cormack broke through two tackles and fired past Barbour to notch his first goal for the club. A minute before the hour Watt brought the house down when his acrobatic overhead kick from Hay’s cross flew past a bewildered Findlay into the Turriff net.

Sargent then went close with a shot on 60 minutes, before Barbour did enough to deny both Jordan Cooper and McKenzie as the home side searched for a quick response. Aitken came close to his first goal for the Broch firing over from a good position after 76 minutes. With three minutes left Hay picked the ball up 30 yards out and fired a howitzer past Findlay to seal the points for the visitors. Right at the death Young rattled the crossbar from a Sargent lay-off.
