Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Fraserburgh v Wick Academy, Saturday 6th August 2022
Wick made the long journey south to Bellslea in round three of the Highland League. The Broch were on the attack immediately when Ross Aitken found Paul Campbell on the right who cut inside his marker before firing a shot well over. On five minutes Scott Barbour’s corner from the left was met by the head of Kieran Simpson but his header was blocked. Another corner from the left this time from Campbell found Ryan Sargent at the edge of the box who sent a curling shot just wide of the far post. Wick’s first attempt came on 9 minutes when Jack Halliday fired in a free kick straight at Joe Barbour.
Seven minutes later Campbell picked up a rebound from a corner and Graeme Williamson did well to save the Broch striker’s effort. Midway through the first half good pressing by the home side won the ball back and Barbour raced cleared before unleashing a shot which Williamson touched onto the crossbar and over for another corner. The pressure increased on the visitors as a Campbell corner from the left found Simpson at the back post, he headed it back across goal only for Sargent to volley just over.
The deadlock was broken on 28 minutes when Sargent collected the ball inside the area after a Campbell knock down and he swept the ball home from 12 yards. 11 minutes later Aitken set up Campbell on the right and his cross was headed against the crossbar by Jamie Beagrie, the rebound was fell to Campbell but Williamson did well to save. Logan Watt then curled in a free kick which Hay headed towards goal the rebound fell to Barbour but he scooped the ball over the bar. Just before the break Willie West and Sargent combined to set up Barbour but his parting shot went just wide of the far upright.

The home side started where they left off when West crashed a long distance shot off the crossbar 5 minutes after the break. The Broch captain then saw a header from a Campbell corner cleared off the line. Paul Young and Aitken then combined to set up Watt but he fired his shot well over. Wick passed up a great chance to level on 65 minutes when Ryan Campbell floated in a pin pint cross but James Flett nodded over with the goal gaping.
On 72 minutes another good run by West on the left ended with him slipping in Barbour who saw his shot cannon off the legs of Williamson. Two minutes later the hosts doubled their lead when Campbell’s corner was knocked down by Beagrie and West rifled the ball home from close range. Barbour then extended the Broch’s lead further when he collected Aitken’s throw-in and smashed a screamer into the left hand postage stamp past a bewildered Williamson. Sean Butcher has a chance in the 85th minute from Ethan Sutherland’s cross but the Wick keeper pulled off a good save.
